Etheostoma jessiae | Blueside Darter
The Blueside Darter, Etheostoma jessiae, is a common species found in the Tennessee River drainage in Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and Virginia, and less commonly found in Bear Creek, Shoal Creek, and Barren Fork. Conservation Fisheries is working with the Blueside Darter as a surragote species to the Bluemask Darter in a tagging study for TVA.
CFI used wild and propagated Blueside Darters to monitor tag retention. This study was to evaluate the effectiveness of tagging as a way of marking Bluemask Darters for monitoring in the Calfkiller River, TN, a river where Bluemask Darters are believed to be extripated.
