Etheostoma nebra | Buck Darter

The Buck darter is a little fish that can be found only in parts of the cold water springs of the Buck Creek watershed in south-central Kentucky. Surveys by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and Eastern Kentucky University have shown that there has been a massive decline in the species over the years.

Conservation Fisheries has been working with propagating the Buck Darter since 2016 and in 2021 we have seen not only survival of stocked fish, but evidence that the stocked stream has a reproducing population. Continued efforts are going to be necessary to save this fish given its very limited distribution.
